Cupping in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs

Cupping is a soft tissue therapy that uses suction to lift and decompress the tissue beneath the skin, promoting blood flow, improving tissue mobility, and helping to reduce muscle tension. At BeFit, cupping is used as an adjunct to physiotherapy, applied when your physiotherapist identifies areas of soft tissue restriction or tightness that would benefit from this technique.

Available at our Edgecliff and Coogee clinics, cupping is delivered by trained practitioners who apply it with clinical reasoning as part of your broader treatment approach. It is a safe, well-tolerated technique that can complement manual therapy and exercise-based rehabilitation.

What to Expect in Your Cupping Appointment at BeFit

During a cupping session, your physiotherapist will place silicone or plastic cups on the area being treated. Suction is created either manually or with a pump, lifting the tissue beneath the cup. The cups may be left in place for several minutes or moved across the skin in a gliding technique, depending on the area and treatment goal.

Cupping is typically incorporated as part of a broader physiotherapy session rather than as a standalone appointment. Afterwards, you may notice circular marks on the treated area, which are normal and fade within a few days. Your physiotherapist will advise on any

Why Book An Appointment at BeFit Training Physiotherapy?
Applied with Clinical Reasoning
Cupping at BeFit is not applied as a standalone treatment. Your physiotherapist uses it when their assessment identifies soft tissue restrictions, areas of reduced blood flow, or muscle tightness that would benefit from the decompressive effect of cupping. It is selected as a tool because it is appropriate for your presentation, not as a routine add-on.
Improving Soft Tissue Mobility
The suction created by cupping lifts the tissue layers beneath the skin, which can help to improve movement between the fascia, muscles, and skin. This decompressive effect is different from the compressive force of massage, and can be particularly useful for areas of tissue that feel stuck or restricted.
Complementing Your Physiotherapy
Cupping works well alongside other physiotherapy techniques. It can be used before manual therapy to prepare the tissue, alongside dry needling to address different layers of soft tissue involvement, or as part of a warm-up before exercise-based rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will integrate it into your session where it adds the most value.
Safe and Well-Tolerated
Cupping is a gentle technique that most people tolerate well. Your practitioner will explain the process and what to expect before starting. Temporary circular marks on the skin are normal and typically fade within a few days. The treatment itself is generally comfortable, and many people find the decompressive sensation relieving.
