Golf performance assessment is one of the most effective ways to increase distance, improve consistency and reduce injury risk. Whether you want to increase golf driving distance, move more efficiently or play pain-free, a detailed golf swing assessment identifies the physical limitations affecting your performance. At BeFit Training Physiotherapy, our golf physiotherapy team uses evidence-based testing, including a TPI golf assessment, to improve mobility, strength and power so you can perform at your best on the course.

Understanding what is limiting your performance — or putting you at risk of injury — requires more than a general movement screen. A golf-specific assessment provides the objective data needed to build a targeted programme, set a meaningful baseline, and track your progress over time. This blog outlines what each area of the assessment involves and what you can expect when you come in.

Range of Motion

Joint range of motion is the foundation of an effective golf swing. Before strength or power can be meaningfully assessed, we need to know whether the body can move through the ranges the swing demands. An ideal golf swing requires adequate mobility at the neck, shoulder, wrist, elbow, thoracic spine, hip, and ankle — across multiple planes of movement and often under load.

Restrictions in any of these areas do not simply limit the swing. They redistribute load to other structures that are not designed to absorb it. A golfer with limited hip internal rotation, for example, will often place excessive demand on the lumbar spine to generate rotation. That is a common driver of lower back pain in golfers — and it is entirely addressable once accurately identified.

A thorough range of motion assessment pinpoints exactly where restrictions exist, distinguishes between mobility and stability deficits, and informs the exercise prescription that follows. Addressing these restrictions not only reduces injury risk but often produces a more efficient, powerful swing with less effort.

Muscular Strength

Strength underpins every physical quality relevant to golf performance. It provides the foundation for power, it protects joints under load, and it determines how well a golfer can sustain swing mechanics across eighteen holes as fatigue accumulates. It is not much of a secret that stronger golfers hit the ball further — most professional golfers invest significant time in strength training for exactly this reason.

What matters just as much as overall strength, however, is identifying weaknesses within the chain. When one segment is weak, neighbouring structures compensate. Those compensations are often where injuries originate and where swing inefficiencies develop. A thorough strength assessment identifies these weak links, establishes an objective baseline, and allows a gym performance programme to be targeted precisely at the areas that will make the most difference — rather than applying a generic template.

Our Golf Improvement Packages at BeFit’s Edgecliff clinic are built around this principle. The assessment informs the programme, and the programme is updated as your capacity improves.

Muscular Power

The single physical test most strongly correlated with driving distance is leg power. This is assessed using a jump test on force plates, which measures the ability to produce force rapidly through the lower limbs. Power is the quality most amateur golfers lack — and it is the quality most rarely trained.

The golf swing derives its power from the ground up. Force is generated through the legs, transferred through the hips and trunk, and delivered through the arms and club. When leg power is underdeveloped, the upper body compensates — and that compensation both limits distance and increases injury risk at the shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

The practical implication is straightforward: leg power is low-hanging fruit for most amateur golfers. If you want to add meaningful distance to your drive without changing your technique, structured power work is the most direct path. A power assessment provides the baseline, identifies the gap between where you are and where you could be, and gives you a target to train toward.

What Happens After the Assessment

Once the full battery of objective testing is complete, a tailored gym programme is developed based on the findings. Rather than a generic strength plan, the programme targets the specific deficits identified across mobility, strength, and power — in the right order, at the right load, for your body.

Re-testing across all capacity domains is built into the programme on a semi-regular basis. This is how elite golfers train — adapting the programme as capacity improves, avoiding plateaus, and ensuring the training continues to drive meaningful adaptation. The same approach is available here.

Common Questions

Who is a golf performance assessment for?

It is for any golfer who wants to understand their physical capacity objectively — whether that means identifying why they are getting injured, finding out what is limiting their distance, or establishing a baseline to train from. You do not need to be a competitive golfer or have an injury to benefit. Many of our patients are recreational golfers in their forties and fifties who want to play better and stay on the course for longer.

What does the assessment involve?

The assessment involves structured testing across three domains: joint range of motion at key sites relevant to the golf swing, muscular strength testing to identify deficits and asymmetries, and leg power assessment using a jump test on force plates. The full assessment is conducted at our Edgecliff clinic and typically takes around sixty minutes.

Do I need to be injured to book an assessment?

No. The assessment is equally relevant for performance improvement as it is for injury management. If you are currently managing a golf-related injury, the assessment will inform your rehabilitation programme. If you are injury-free and want to improve, it will identify the physical gaps most likely to be limiting your performance and longevity on the course.

How is this different from a standard physiotherapy appointment?

A standard physiotherapy appointment focuses on assessing and managing a specific injury or complaint. A golf performance assessment takes a broader view — evaluating the physical qualities that underpin your golf swing across multiple domains, regardless of whether you are currently in pain. The outcome is a targeted performance programme rather than an injury treatment plan, though the two can run concurrently where relevant.

Is the golf performance assessment available at both clinics?

Golf Improvement Packages, including the performance assessment, are available at our Edgecliff clinic. Our Coogee clinic offers the full range of physiotherapy services. Contact either clinic to discuss what is most appropriate for your situation.
