Golf Fitness Handicap – Titleist Performance Institute

Most golfers have a handicap, and their sole goal is to reduce it to the lowest possible number. A lot of golfers practice for hours a week in order to drop strokes off their GA handicap but very few do anything to improve on their physical capabilities. The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) have developed a ‘handicap’ system that summarises your range of motion, neuromuscular control and strength into one familiar number and this a termed your Golf Fitness Handicap – ranging from +7 (really good) to 36 (needs some improvement) just like the GA handicap that you’re used to trying to improve on a weekly basis.

In order to get a TPI Golf Fitness Handicap, you come in for a personalised full-body screening session here at BeFit Training Physio and Tom (our resident TPI specialist and 5 handicapper) will put you through a series of assessments. At the end of the assessment, you’ll have a TPI Fitness Handicap and we will have identified the current deficits that are restricting your ability to hit the ball further and straighter.

Once we’ve identified the problem, we’ll design a mobility/strength program with you which is tailored specifically to your deficits so you can work on lowering your fitness handicap. The benefit of having the tailored program, is that not only will you start to feel better in general for your day to day tasks, but you’ll also be helping to lower your GA handicap in the process. Even small incremental improvements in mobility can have an enormous effect on how you swing the golf club and the ease with which you are able to get into a loaded position at the top of your swing. The ability to wind up efficiently in your backswing allows you to generate more clubhead speed and that translates to increased distance.

Once you start hitting the ball further, it’s much easier to go low when you’ve got a wedge into a green rather than a 7 iron. So if you’re struggling for distance, or wanting to feel better when swinging on the first tee, come into the Befit Physio clinic for a TPI Golf Fitness assessment and we can get you working towards increasing that distance off the tee!
